Mengenal Kanal Ben Gurion, yang Disebut-sebut Motif Utama Israel Ingin Kuasai Gaza

 - Proyek Kanal Ben Gurion belakangan menjadi perbincangan hangat lantaran diduga menjadi motif utama Israel memborbardir Gaza. Dengan menguasai Gaza dan mengeliminir Hamas, maka proyek ambisius yang telah lama dicanangkan itu akan terwujud.

Kanal Ben Gurion sendiri dimaksudkan akan menjadi pesaing utama Terusan Suez di Mesir yang sangat strategis dalam mengontrol perdagangan serta kontrol militer dunia. Selain itu, juga penghasil cuan luar biasa. Sebagai perbandingan, pada tahun fiskal 2022-23, Otoritas Terusan Suez Mesir meraup pendapatan tol USD9,4 miliar, menyumbang hampir 2 persen dari PDB Mesir sebesar USD476,8 miliar, menurut Bank Dunia.

Ide pembuatan Kanal Ben Gurion muncul sejak era 1960-an. Nama kanal ini merujuk pada pendiri Israel, David Ben-Gurion (1886-1973). Jika proyek ini benar-benar diselesaikan, maka akan mengubah dinamika maritim global dengan menghapus monopoli Mesir atas rute terpendek antara Eropa dan Asia, yaitu Terusan Suez.

Dilansir dari Indian Express, Sabtu (11/11/2023), Kanal Ben Gurion direncanakan melalui Gurun Negev yang dikendalikan oleh Israel, dari ujung Teluk Aqaba, timur Laut Merah yang mencuat ke ujung selatan Israel dan barat daya Yordania, ke pantai Timur Mediterania.

Bukti dokumenter proyek ambisius Israel ini dapat dilihat dalam memorandum pemerintah AS pada tahun 1963. Memo tersebut menyerukan penggunaan bahan peledak nuklir untuk menggali terusan melalui Gurun Negev di Israel.

"Salah satu aplikasi menarik lain dari ekskavasi nuklir akan menjadi terusan pada ketinggian laut sepanjang 160 mil melintasi Israel, menghubungkan Laut Mediterania dengan Teluk Aqaba (dan dengan demikian Laut Merah dan Samudera Hindia). Terusan seperti itu akan menjadi alternatif yang strategis untuk Terusan Suez yang ada dan mungkin sangat berkontribusi pada pengembangan ekonomi daerah sekitarnya," demikian isi memo tersebut.

Apa yang menghentikan Israel membangun proyek Ben Gurion?

Pertama, proyek ambisius ini membutuhkan dana fantastis. Biaya perkiraan proyek Ben Gurion ditaksir mencapai USD100 miliar, jauh lebih tinggi daripada biaya yang mungkin diperlukan untuk melebarkan Terusan Suez dan mengatasi masalah lalu lintasnya.

Menurut memo AS di atas, biaya menggali terusan konvensional membuat perencana melihat opsi nuklir. Tentu saja, risiko terjadinya dampak nuklir membuat opsi ini sangat berisiko juga.

Rute yang direncanakan untuk kanal Ben Gurion lebih dari 100 km lebih panjang daripada Terusan Suez, terutama karena keterbatasan medan dan topografi. Bahkan jika dibangun, banyak kapal mungkin masih lebih memilih rute lama yang lebih pendek.

 - The Ben Gurion Canal project has recently become a hot topic of conversation because it is suspected to be Israel's main motive for bombarding Gaza. By controlling Gaza and eliminating Hamas, this ambitious project that has long been planned will be realized. 

The Ben Gurion Canal itself is intended to be the main competitor to the Suez Canal in Egypt which is very strategic in controlling world trade and military control. Apart from that, it also makes extraordinary profits. By comparison, in the 2022-23 fiscal year, Egypt's Suez Canal Authority raked in $9.4 billion in toll revenues, accounting for nearly 2 percent of Egypt's GDP of $476.8 billion, according to the World Bank. 

The idea of ​​creating the Ben Gurion Canal emerged in the 1960s. The name of this canal refers to the founder of Israel, David Ben-Gurion (1886-1973). If this project is actually completed, it will change global maritime dynamics by eliminating Egypt's monopoly on the shortest route between Europe and Asia, namely the Suez Canal. 

Reporting from the Indian Express, Saturday (11/11/2023), the Ben Gurion Canal is planned to run through the Negev Desert which is controlled by Israel, from the tip of the Gulf of Aqaba, east of the Red Sea sticking out to the southern tip of Israel and southwest Jordan, to the Eastern Mediterranean coast. 

Documentary evidence of this ambitious Israeli project can be seen in a US government memorandum from 1963. The memo called for the use of nuclear explosives to dig a canal through Israel's Negev Desert. 

“One other interesting application of nuclear excavation would be a 160-mile sea level canal across Israel, connecting the Mediterranean Sea with the Gulf of Aqaba (and thus the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean). "Such a canal would be a strategic alternative to the existing Suez Canal and may greatly contribute to the economic development of the surrounding area," the memo said. 

What is stopping Israel from building the Ben Gurion project? 

First, this ambitious project requires fantastic funding. The estimated cost of the Ben Gurion project is estimated at USD 100 billion, much higher than the costs that would likely be required to widen the Suez Canal and solve its traffic problems. 

According to the US memo above, the costs of digging a conventional canal led planners to look at nuclear options. Of course, the risk of nuclear fallout makes this option very risky as well. 

The planned route for the Ben Gurion canal is more than 100 km longer than that of the Suez Canal, mainly due to terrain and topography limitations. Even if built, many ships may still prefer the old, shorter route. 

Most importantly, however, the Ben Gurion canal, which has the potential to facilitate the transportation of billions of dollars' worth of goods every day, cannot operate if the surrounding land area is still in turmoil, whether from Hamas rockets or attacks by other groups.
